If you are sourcing microneedling pens or cartridges from an OEM manufacturer, understanding the certification landscape is essential. Three certifications matter most for the European and UK markets: CE marking, UKCA certification, and RoHS compliance.
CE marking certifies that a product meets European health, safety, and environmental requirements. For microneedling devices, this typically falls under the Medical Device Regulation (MDR) 2017/745. The classification depends on the device’s intended use. Microneedling pens used for cosmetic purposes may be Class I, while those intended for medical applications could be Class IIa or higher.
The manufacturer must compile a technical file including design specifications, risk analysis, clinical evaluation, and quality management system documentation.
Since Brexit, the UK operates its own certification framework. UKCA largely mirrors CE marking requirements but requires separate registration with a UK-approved body. Devices that already hold CE marking may need additional UKCA assessment depending on the device class.
RoHS ensures materials meet limits for hazardous substances like lead, mercury, and cadmium. This applies to electronic components in motorized microneedling pens and connectors. A reputable OEM manufacturer tests all materials through third-party laboratories and maintains RoHS declaration documents for every batch.
