Derma Pen OEM Cost Breakdown What You Are Really Paying For

A startup brand allocated 60 percent of their product launch budget to marketing and 40 percent to product development and manufacturing. Six months after launch, they had spent the marketing budget but had no inventory because the factory could not maintain consistent quality. The marketing drove traffic to a product that was not available.

An OEM contract for microneedling cartridges is not a purchase order with a long lead time. It is a manufacturing partnership that requires clear definitions of specifications, tolerances, quality acceptance criteria, and regulatory responsibilities.

The first section that matters is the specification attachment. This document defines every measurable parameter of the cartridge: needle geometry (type, tip radius, bevel angles), needle array layout (spacing, row offset, needle count), hub dimensions (flange diameter, cavity depth, adapter interface), and packaging requirements (pouch material, seal type, labeling). Every dimension should have a nominal value, a tolerance, and a measurement method referenced.

The second critical section is the quality agreement. This defines the inspection plan for each production batch: which parameters are inspected, at what frequency, using what measurement equipment, and what the acceptance criteria are. At tbphp, our standard OEM quality agreement covers 47 inspection points per batch, with SPC data shared on request.

The third section is the regulatory responsibility matrix. For CE-marked devices, the manufacturer must maintain the technical file and handle PMS obligations. For CE-registered devices, the manufacturer must maintain establishment registration and device listing, and the importer must handle UDI labeling requirements. The contract should clearly assign these responsibilities.

The fourth section is the IP and tooling ownership clause. The mold and fixtures are typically paid for by the OEM partner and remain their property. The contract should specify what happens to the tooling at the end of the agreement period and how design changes are handled.

We provide a standard OEM contract template to partners who request it. The contract has been reviewed by legal counsel with medical device industry experience.

Most OEM project delays come from incomplete specifications and unverified supplier claims. A structured qualification process that includes specification review, sample testing, and factory audit reduces these risks. tbphp provides OEM partners with detailed specification data and regulatory support.
